On Aug. 7, 1974, three prominent Republicans met with Richard Nixon and told the embattled president he had lost crucial support on Capitol Hill.

After Nixon listened to U.S. Sen. Barry Goldwater, R-Ariz., U.S. House Minority Leader John Rhodes, R-Ariz., and U.S. Senate Minority Leader Hugh Scott, R-Pa., he knew he would be impeached, convicted and removed from office in connection with the Watergate scandal.
