In observance of the Lady Panthers winning the state championship, Spring Garden principal Mike Welsh announced last week that the court inside Dale Welsh Gym would be named in honor of their coach, Ricky Austin.

Austin’s career at Spring Garden includes five Class 1A girls state basketball championships, one 1A volleyball state championship, 562 victories with the girls, 130 victories with the boys and numerous county and area titles.

At a recent meeting of the Cherokee County Board of Education, the board adopted an official resolution of the ruling.

In an interview with 100.5 FM.900 AM Radio, Austin said that an accomplishment like this usually comes during the twilight of a career.

“I’m not finished yet,” he said, adding that the honor will motivate him to live up to having a court with his namesake the rest of his career.

“This doesn’t change anything,” he said. “We still have a lot more practices in this gym, a lot more games to win, a lot more hard work to do and this won’t change any of that.”
