AUBURN -- Piedmont coach Steve Smith and several of his players spoke to reporters after Thursday's 23-12 loss to Flomaton in the Class 3A state finals.
AUBURN — If rules for Thursday's Class 3A state finals allowed Piedmont's Steve Smith to challenge a referee's call, he was going to do so, if necessary.
Playing in the Class 3A state finals for the third time in four years, Piedmont fell 23-12 to Flomaton on Thursday.
In observance of the Lady Panthers winning the state championship, Spring Garden principal Mike Welsh announced last week that the court inside Dale Welsh Gym would be named in honor of their coach, Ricky Austin.
The Piedmont school board has accepted the resignation of former boys varsity basketball coach Tommy Lewis, ending what Piedmont High School athletic director and football coach Steve Smith called “the unprecedented success that we’ve had over the last 12 years in the sport of boys basketball.”
Alexandria track coach Chase Brisendine is a prophet in his own time. After Alexandria’s strong showing in a meet at Albertville on Mar. 30, Brisendine said he felt the Valley Cubs could win in girls’ competition at the annual Calhoun County track meet. Monday at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Brisendine’s squad members proved him right. Alexandria won six of 18 events and finished second six times as well on their way to 152 points and the girls’ title. Oxford finished second with 107 points.
