Anniston police said on Monday that a local man killed Friday was beaten to death.

Police Chief Shane Denham said Russell Lowery Arnold, 26, of Anniston allegedly beat and killed William Canada, 53, of Anniston Friday evening. Police have charged Arnold with murder.

"The cause of death, we believe it's going to be blunt-force trauma," Denham said.

Denham could not yet say what weapon or item might have been used in the homicide.

Denham could not provide details on what the motive was for the murder but said the suspect and victim knew each other prior to the incident.

"They were friends ... they did know each other very well," Denham said.

Assistant Calhoun County Coroner Jay Bowden said Canada was pronounced dead at 11:08 p.m. Friday at Stringfellow Memorial Hospital.

Canada's body has since been taken to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy.
The incident occurred at a house in the 1800 block of Abbott Avenue.

Arnold was in the Calhoun County Jail on Monday afternoon with bond set at $75,000.
