A Piedmont man is dead after a Friday morning argument that led to an attack, police say.

Marion Brown, 53, of Piedmont died Friday at UAB Hospital in Birmingham, Piedmont police Chief Freddie Norton said.

Police found Brown bleeding and unconscious in a house in the 600 block of Draper Street around 2 a.m. after responding to a call from the house. Norton said the house wasn’t Brown’s primary residence, but that he often stayed there.

Police interviewed a witness on the scene, Norton said, and later found other witnesses who had left after the police were called. That led them to Edward Maurice Johnson, 40, of Piedmont, as a suspect. Norton said the two were at a gathering at the Draper Street house Friday morning when they had some dispute.

“It was just an argument that led to something else,” Norton said. Norton declined comment on the nature of the argument and the type of weapon, if any, used in the alleged attack.

Police arrested Johnson on Friday afternoon in a home on Oak Street in Piedmont, Norton said.

Johnson faces a murder charge, and his bond was set at $150,000, Norton said. He has a preliminary hearing on Jan. 15.
