A two-vehicle wreck in Ohatchee Monday evening left one dead and sent several others to hospitals by ambulance and helicopter, officials said.

Calhoun County Coroner Pat Brown said by phone on Monday that Reimundo Juarez Jr., 30, of Ohatchee was killed when his BMW collided with a small SUV near the intersection of Alabama 144 and Ingram Wells Circle in Ohatchee.

“He was traveling west on 144 when he crossed the centerline and hit the other vehicle head on,” Brown said. The wreck occurred around 5:15 p.m. and Juarez was pronounced dead at the scene about 20 minutes later, Brown said.

According to a news release late Monday from the Jacksonville post of Alabama State Troopers, the SUV was a 2012 Jeep Liberty; four occupants of the vehicle were injured.

“Piedmont rescue took a couple to the hospital and another was airlifted to UAB,” the coroner said.

Juarez was not wearing a seat belt, according to the troopers report, which noted that the agency is continuing its investigation of the wreck.
