An Attalla woman was killed in a one-car crash on Rocky Hollow Lane in Webster’s Chapel on Sunday morning, county officials say.

Mary Denise Benefield, 24, lost control of her car, ran off the road around 8 a.m. and hit a tree, said Jay Bowden, assistant Calhoun County coroner. She was seven months pregnant, Bowden said. Ejected from the car during the crash, Benefield is believed to have not been wearing a seatbelt, Bowden said, citing the investigators’ findings.

“It appears she was headed to work when the accident happened.” Bowden said. He said Benefield worked in Anniston and was leaving a home in Webster’s Chapel to go to work.

State Trooper Jimmy Harrell said investigators believe the wreck occurred around 8:10 a.m. He said first responders were dispatched to the scene before 8:30 a.m.

Harrell said investigators found Benefield was traveling around 55 mph at the time she lost control of the car. The speed limit was 35 mph, Harrell said.
