A collision on Bynum Leatherwood Road on Thursday afternoon left two people dead, according to the Calhoun County coroner.

Coroner Pat Brown identified the victims as Richard Green, 61, of Eastaboga, and Mary Sattler, 75, of Anniston. Each was the driver and sole occupant of their respective vehicles.

The coroner pronounced them dead at the scene shortly after 1 p.m. He said Green had been ejected from his late-model pickup and and Sattler was wearing her minivan’s seat belt.

Anniston police had the southbound lane of Bynum Leatherwood Road blocked at the Parkwood Drive intersection at about 2:30 while Alabama State Troopers attended the scene of the crash.

Blakley Ratliff, who lives nearby, described the post-accident scene as chaotic, and said officers blocked the scene “respectfully” and turned away people wandering from their idling vehicles toward the accident scene.

Alabama State Trooper Cpl. Jimmy Harrell said his office would provide more information about the accident later.
