Authorities say a driver could face a felony charge after fleeing the scene of a two-vehicle wreck in which an Ohatchee man was killed Friday afternoon.

The crash occurred at about 3:45 p.m. near the intersection of U.S. 431 and Bynum Leatherwood Drive in the Saks area. According to State Trooper Cpl. Jimmy Harrell, a man driving a Chevy Impala pulled out in front of a motorcyclist as he traveled southbound on U.S. 431.

Following notification of next of kin, Calhoun County Coroner Pat Brown identified the victim as Delbert Bell Jr., 64, of Ohatchee.

Though state troopers are handling the wreck, Anniston police assisted at the scene Friday afternoon.

Speaking at the site of the wreck, Anniston police Capt. Nick Bowles said the driver of the Impala fled the scene on foot. Harrell said Anniston police captured the suspect at 4:14 p.m. Harrell said the suspect ran to his mother’s house nearby.

The suspect will likely face a felony charge of leaving the scene of an accident, according to the trooper.

Harrell said Friday evening that the suspect was in state troopers’ custody and the agency was waiting clearance to place the suspect in the Calhoun County Jail.

Harrell said the wreck briefly shut down both south and northbound lanes of U.S. 431. By 4:50 first responders were still diverting traffic on the highways southbound lanes.
