The Boys and Girls Clubs of East Central Alabama will hold a sports memorabilia auction Feb. 24 to help raise money for the group’s services for local children.

“It’s just a fun evening that we're trying to get the community to come out and support us,” said Johnny Byrd, chief professional officer for the local Boys and Girls Clubs.

The event will be held at Classic on Noble at 7 p.m., with a reception at 6 p.m.

Byrd said the memorabilia being auctioned will include autographed items from teams representing the University of Alabama, Clemson University and the University of Georgia.

Byrd said the auction is one of three fundraisers the group puts on each year, the other two being a clay shoot in May and the Stake and Steak Dinner in August. The dinner is served mainly by children who are helped by the organization and the event typically includes a guest speaker who talks about the importance of the clubs’ services.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of East Central Alabama serves children in Randolph, Talladega and Calhoun counties. According to Byrd, the group serves an annual membership of about 390 kids, providing after-school services and summer programs that include tutoring, field trips and character education.

Byrd said organizers use their community contacts to get in touch with sports officials who provide the memorabilia for the auction.

“It’s a community effort,” he said.

Tickets for the auction are $15 and can be purchased by calling 256-236-7050.
