Jan. 21, 1944, in The Star: One of the more popular young women on the campus at Auburn is one of Anniston’s own citizens. She is the former Mary Jo Spradley, who not so very long ago became the wife of Navy Lt. Thomas Bridges, also of Anniston. The latest honor to be added to Mary Jo’s name is her election to the post of chairman of the Alabama Polytechnic Institute branch of the Lee County chapter of the American Red Cross. Reports are that the chapter has already begun to work and that under the direction of this young Navy wife it is doing some fine work.
Jan. 21, 1994, in The Star: The winter weather that rocked northeast Alabama this week is fading, but residents can look for a new reminder in the coming weeks. Utility providers in this region say bills for electricity and natural gas used in January will be among the highest in years because of the single-digit temperatures. “I tell people to listen to their furnace. It seemed like mine never cut off,” said James Taylor, district manager of Alabama Gas Co.
