Sept. 7, 1993, in The Star: Col. Patrick Kirby, commander of Anniston Army Depot, and Dr. Harold McGee, president of Jacksonville State University, this morning signed an agreement to establish a Manufacturing Technology Consortium at the depot which will help educate students and businesses in north Alabama about the most advanced manufacturing technology. The consortium, though in its infancy, will begin with a membership of 19 counties in north Alabama. It will have a Technology Transfer Center at the depot which will help share information among students, educational institutions and private industry. Also this date: Eric Hawkins, a 16-year-old junior at Talladega High School, is also a fledgling country music performer. He’s scheduled to compete in a Nashville talent search called “Starbound ’93” on Oct. 9. Eric has been singing since he was 5 years old, but didn’t perform for a crowd until 21/2 years ago at a festival in Kymulga. He is also in his third year of participation in ROTC at Talladega High.
