Feb. 20, 1943, was a Saturday during a 12-year period when The Star wasn’t published on that day of the week.

Feb. 20, 1993, in The Star: The prospect of not one but two 4A Area 10 basketball championships in one night packed the Alexandria High gym to capacity last night. Valley Cub fans attending were doubly pleased at evening’s end. That’s because Coach Larry Ginn’s boys defeated Lincoln 81-58 for their title and girls coach Jim Heathcock saw his team claim the crown with a 61-37 win over Munford. Also this date: Another motorist has died at the DeArmanville Drive railroad crossing (Calhoun County Road 45), this time from an accident between a Norfolk Southern train and a tractor-trailer yesterday afternoon. It’s the fourth crash, resulting in five deaths, at that point since 1990. It’s been three years since lawmakers first proposed installing warning devices to guard against such accidents there.
