Jacksonville resident and Alabama state school board member Cynthia McCarty has a new role for the upcoming school year.

During the monthly Alabama State Board of Education meeting today, Dr. Cynthia McCarty of District 6 was elected vice president of the Board,” a Tuesday press release from the board said.

McCarty, a Jacksonville State University professor was elected to the state school board in 2014. She’s running for re-election without opposition this year. By law, the Governor Kay Ivey is officially president of the board; in practice, meetings are often run by the board’s president pro tem and vice president.

Attempts to reach McCarty for comment Wednesday were unsuccessful.
