HEFLIN — The Cleburne County Board of Education voted unanimously Monday night to increase the monthly salary for board members from $300 to $500 effective Dec. 1, 2018.

Board Chairman Jerry Cash said that members have been receiving $300 apiece for many years but the increase would bring the salary in-line with other counties the same size as Cleburne.

Cash said most board members in other counties the same size as Cleburne receive $600 per month.

The board also held annual officer elections during its monthly meeting. Cash was voted in as chairman and Lonny Watson was voted in as vice-chairman. This is Cash’s third nonconsecutive term as chairman.

“It’s an honor to be chairman. I’m glad they nominated me — as far as chairman we are all equals on the board — we all get one vote just like everybody else does,” Cash said.

The board also established the board meeting schedule for 2017-2018.

The next regular board meeting will be held at 4 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 4, at Cleburne County Elementary School.
