A shoplifting suspect crashed a Ford Fiesta in the Wellborn area Saturday morning after a brief police chase, Anniston police say.

Workers at the Dollar General on Eulaton Road called police between 10 a.m. and noon Saturday to report a theft  by someone who fled in a gray Ford Fiesta, Police Lt. Kevin Briley said. An officer driving through the area later spotted a Fiesta at the Dixie Mart near the store. The car sped away, Briley said, and the officer gave chase for about a mile on Eulaton Road.

When the Fiesta hit 70 mph, the officer called off the chase, Briley said.

“We try to weigh the severity of the crime against the danger to the public,” Briley said.

The Fiesta sideswiped a tree at the corner of Eulaton Road and Patterson Street. Neighbors told police that two people fled the car on foot, Briley said.

The car is now impounded, Briley said, and police will try to find the driver.

Briley said Saturday afternoon that he didn’t know what items were reported stolen from the store.
