Anniston police on Monday continued to interview witnesses and family members of a 32-year-old man shot to death early Saturday.
“We still have a suspect in mind, but no arrest has been made,” Anniston police Lt. Chris Sparks said this morning.
Shortly before 2 a.m. police officers responded to a report of gunfire at an apartment on the 2800 block of Gurnee Avenue, Chief Shane Denham said Saturday. Darion Welch was found with multiple gunshot wounds at the entrance of the dwelling, the chief said.
Calhoun County Coroner Pat Brown said Welch was taken to Regional Medical Center where he later died on the operating table shortly before 6:45 a.m.
A 38-year-old woman who was at the apartment was also shot, police said on Monday.
“She was struck in the leg with a non- life-threatening injury,” Sparks said.
The lieutenant said the woman was also taken to RMC and was later released.
Sparks, citing the investigation, declined to say if any other witnesses were at the apartment during the shooting or what may have led to the incident.
Welch’s death was the first homicide case within Anniston’s city limits and the second case for police investigators this year. Benny Burgess was charged in February with murder in the death of his wife, Connie Burgess, in the Wellborn area. Between January and mid-April last year, Anniston police investigators had six cases.
