Oxford police hope tips from the public lead them to a man who took a charity’s donation station from the city’s Wal-Mart store Tuesday.

Police Capt. L.G. Owens said Wednesday that investigators already believe they know the identity of the man, who can be seen in security video wheeling the large plastic donation container out of the store’s foyer in a shopping cart.

“It’s brazen,” Owens said. “I’m at a loss for what to say on someone who would steal something like that.”

The container belongs to the Children’s Miracle Network, and was taken between 7:20 and 7:50 Tuesday night. Owens said he didn’t know how much money might have been in the receptacle. The network raises money to support 170 member hospitals in the United States and Canada, according to information on its website.

The Police Department posted the security video to its Facebook page Wednesday afternoon, and Owens said that within an hour investigators had numerous leads generated by calls from the public. He said he expected an arrest soon.
