A couple in their 70s who attended Banks High School in Birmingham and later Jacksonville State University are the victims of a homicide at the scene of their swimming pool business in Denham Springs, La.
According to reporting from al.com and The Advocate of Baton Rouge, La., citing authorities at the scene, Eugene “Frank” Gurley, 72, and Patricia Gurley, 70, were killed by someone whom authorities believe knew the couple. An arrest warrant was issued Wednesday for 45-year-old Michael Collins, in connection with the burglary of a white pickup truck that belonged to the couple and named him as a person of interest in the double homicide.
Denham Springs Police Chief Shannon Womack was quoted in The Advocate as calling the crime “senseless and heinous” and “not random.” He said the Gurleys’ bodies were discovered in the warehouse of the pool business Tuesday night.
As it happened, the police chief had bought a swimming pool liner from Frank Gurley years ago.
“It’s a tremendous loss to the community. He was a great man,” Womack told The Advocate.
Television station WAFB-9 also identified Frank Gurley as a retired schoolteacher who taught at both Denham Springs High School and Denham Springs Junior High School.
