A Choccolocco area man was charged with domestic violence by strangulation on Saturday after a disagreement over his medication, authorities said.

Calhoun County Sheriff Matthew Wade said deputies responded to a 911 call about a disturbance on Choccolocco Road on Friday night.

Wade said deputies arrived to find a visibly upset woman and an intoxicated Matthew Hulsey, 43, who had reportedly been in an altercation.

The woman reported that her attempt to administer medicine to Hulsey resulted in his striking her multiple times and placing his hands around her neck. The sheriff said deputies noticed visible marks on the woman’s neck.

Domestic violence by strangulation is a Class B felony punishable by two to 20 years in prison.

Hulsey was released on Monday on a $15,000 bond. He has a preliminary hearing set for Sept. 24.
