Anniston police are investigating as a homicide a shooting death that occurred late Monday night in a Lenlock shopping strip.

James Byrd Jr., late 30s in age, of Anniston, was pronounced dead at 10:50 p.m. from what appeared to be a gunshot wound, Calhoun County Assistant Coroner Jay Bowden said. The victim was in the front seat of a small red SUV, Bowden told The Star at the scene.

The shooting occurred around 10 or 10:15 p.m. and no suspect had been arrested as of 2 a.m., Anniston police Sgt. Shaun Firestone said at that time, speaking in the parking lot of the shopping strip at the corner of Glade and Weaver roads that contains a fish market and a bridge club meeting space.

Firestone said investigators are “pursuing all leads.”

As he spoke, a wrecker behind him prepared to take away the red SUV. Onlookers watched from across Glade Road.

The sergeant said people across Weaver Road at the Sonic drive-in heard gunfire in the parking lot.

Bowden said the victim’s body would be sent to Huntsville for an autopsy.
