An Anniston man remained in a Birmingham hospital on Tuesday with a gunshot wound to the chest, police said.

Police were called to Constantine Homes on Elm Street around 4:45 p.m. Monday on a report of gunfire, Anniston police Sgt. Kyle Price said on Tuesday.

“There were two large groups of men and they got into an altercation,” Price said.

The sergeant declined to say what the altercation was about. During the altercation, one man in the crowd fired a pistol, Price said.

“Our victim was struck in the chest and he was taken straight to UAB” Hospital, the sergeant said.

Price said the victim, a 20-year-old Anniston man, was in stable condition Tuesday morning.

Investigators have identified a suspect, but have not made an arrest in the case yet, Price said.
