A 38-year-old Anniston man was charged with domestic violence by strangulation after a November incident at an Alexandria home, authorities said.

Calhoun County Sheriff Matthew Wade on Monday said Joshua Lipham was arrested after reportedly stealing a prepaid credit card from his wife’s purse, then slapping and choking her on Nov. 21.

The couple had been separated for about six months and Lipham was visiting his children at the time of the incident, according to Wade. He said Lipham denied taking the card from the woman’s purse, which led to a fight.

Wade said the woman called the Sheriff’s Office at 3 a.m. Nov. 22, though the incident occurred at 11:30 p.m. the day before.

Wade said Lipham turned himself in at the Calhoun County Jail on Saturday. He was released the same day on $6,000 bond, according to a Sheriff’s Office arrest report.
