An Anniston man was in Calhoun County Jail on Monday after Weaver police obtained a warrant for his arrest in connection with the fatal shooting of a woman Friday night.
Weaver police responded to a call on Friday about shots fired in a parking lot at Heroes American Grille, Weaver police Lt. Charles Plitt said on Saturday. At the scene, police found Cori Christine Green, 22, with a gunshot wound to the head, Plitt said on Monday. Green died Sunday as a result of her injury, Plitt said.
Michael Shane Levens Jr., 22, was charged with first-degree assault, according to the warrant sworn out by Weaver police investigator Michael Kane, after he allegedly shot Green in the head. Levens was booked into the Calhoun County Jail on Saturday and his bond was set at $100,000 cash, according to the warrant.
Prosecutors from the Calhoun County District Attorney’s Office met with Plitt on Monday, he said, to discuss Levens’ charges.
“He’s not charged with murder right now,” Plitt said. “That could change pending the outcome of the investigation.”
Plitt said Saturday that Green was taken to Regional Medical Center Jacksonville immediately after the shooting and then to UAB Hospital in Birmingham by ambulance.
Plitt also said Saturday that he was unsure of the circumstances that led to the shooting and declined to comment on that Monday.
“We’ve got a long road ahead of us,” Plitt said noting the investigation was ongoing. “We can’t release anything further.”
