A Wellington man was killed Thursday evening in a single-vehicle wreck west of Anniston, officials said.

State troopers responded to the wreck shortly after 6 p.m. on Bynum Leatherwood Road, Cpl. Jimmy Harrell wrote in a news release. Calhoun County Coroner Pat Brown identified the driver as 64-year-old Jimmy Frank Nelson.

Nelson was traveling north on Bynum Leatherwood Road when his 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe crossed the center line into oncoming traffic, Brown said.

“He drifted back into his lane and then ran off the road into a ditch,” Brown said. “It appears he had a cardiac event prior to his wreck.”

Harrell said Nelson was not wearing a seatbelt and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
