July 28, 1939, in The Star: Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow afternoon from his residence for well-known retired Oxford business owner Jabe Curry Cox. Mr. Cox opened a grocery store soon after he moved to Oxford in 1897 and operated it until retiring a few years ago. Mr. Cox died of a heart attack this morning at the breakfast table in his home, 601 McPherson St. He is survived by his wife and four daughters: Mrs. S. F. Teague, Miss Ruby Cox, Mrs. Oswald E. Brummel and Mrs. M. R. McDonald.Also this date: A rental car agency, called “Ed’s U-Drive-It Co.,” has opened at 113 East 11th St. in Anniston – that’s opposite King Motor Co., so it’s not surprising the cars are new Ford V-8s. E. J. West is the president. Rates are not listed in the advertisement. Additionally: From Mentone, Ala., comes word that Camp Cloudmont, where about 100 boys from several states have gathered, is under quarantine due to an outbreak of polio. A 15-year-old Florida boy has died and an 11-year-old Ohio boy is fighting for his life.
July 28, 1989, in The Star: Camping outdoors in the summer is one thing, but camping outdoors in the summer to buy tickets for a Rolling Stones concert is quite another. However, some people — it's not really known how many, since this sort of thing has never happened before in Anniston — are expected to try it tonight. Their campsite will be someplace near Hudson's department store in downtown Anniston, since that's where the tickets will go on sale tomorrow at 7 a.m. The concert is scheduled for Oct. 5at Legion Field in Birmingham.
