Truck burns on unfinished section of parkway

Truck fire

Anniston firefighters deal with a burning truck at a future on-ramp to Veterans Memorial Parkway near McClellan Boulevard.

The cab of an 18-wheeler caught fire Wednesday near McClellan Boulevard on a gravel roadbed where crews are building the last leg of Veterans Memorial Parkway.

Sgt. James Pinkard of the Anniston Fire Department, at the scene, would not identify the truck’s driver and said laws prohibit him from saying whether anyone was injured in the blaze, but an Anniston EMS ambulance carried one man from the scene. The man was able to talk to first responders, and DeJarvis Leonard, division engineer for the Alabama Department of Transportation, said the driver was taken to a hospital for observation.
