A Piedmont woman and an Anniston man died in a one-vehicle accident in Cherokee County on Thursday evening.

According to a press release from the Alabama Department of Public Safety, Nikki Stancil, 24, of Piedmont and Michael Barnwell, 31, of Anniston died after their vehicle overturned at 8:35 p.m. on U.S. 278, 5 miles east of Piedmont.

According to the report, neither victim was wearing a seatbelt when the crash occurred, and no other vehicles were involved in the accident. Stancill was driving when the crash occurred, according to the release.

Cherokee County Deputy Coroner Carl Brown said Stancil and Barnwell died at the scene and were not ejected from the vehicle.

"The vehicle landed upside down and it crushed the top," Brown said.

Brown said he did not know what might have caused the wreck.

"I don't have a clue — nobody saw it happen," Brown said. "Someone drove by and saw it after the fact."

Alabama State Troopers are still investigating the incident, according to the release.
