“Plant the seeds of love, and watch them grow,” says Sygrid Beard as she rocks on her front porch in Alexandria. Nominated by two of her closest friends, Beard was chosen as one of this year’s recipients of a beautification award for the county. She says that embellishing her yard is a joy.

“It is a serenity. It’s a time for me to reflect and relax.”

The Calhoun County Beautification Board held its annual awards luncheon Friday at the Anniston Country Club. Selected in this year’s batch of winners were locations ranging from residential to commercial properties. Joshua and Jillian Bridges, a sibling duo from Saks, provided music as guests arrived.

Beautification board president Truman Norred applauded all guests at the luncheon for their dedication to consistently improving the beauty of the county.

Traditionally, awards have been given to residential and commercial properties, but this year, the city of Anniston’s Quintard Avenue is award-winning.

Tametrius Long has worked for the city of Anniston for more than 20 years. He said that Quintard Avenue is currently the city’s biggest landscaping project.

All winners received plaques to post on their property, in addition to a recognition certificate. Shane Boone, who lives with his parents, Lynn and Eddie Boone, looks forward to displaying the sign in their front lawn. “It’s an honor to watch the joy on my mother’s face as something beautiful grows in our yard,” he said.

County Extension Coordinator David West serves as the adviser for the beautification board, while the rest of the board members are appointed by the Calhoun County Commission. There are two board members for each of the commission’s five districts.

Nominations for the annual beautification awards require two photographs of the property, in addition to a formal application. According to West, the entry period to for submissions takes place from March 1 to May 30, with voting beginning in early June.
