Anniston police are investigating the death Monday of an Anniston man as a possible homicide, Calhoun County Coroner Pat Brown said late Monday evening.

Deputy Coroner Dudley Miller was called around 1 p.m. Monday to the 2200 block of Parkwood Drive. Miller told The Star he declared Casey Lynn Payne, 39, dead of a gunshot wound to the chest.

The coroner's office then handed the investigation over to the Anniston Police Department, Miller said. Coroner's office officials said the death was being investigated as a possible homicide.

Anniston police Capt. Allen George said the wound to Payne’s chest was from a shotgun. He said the Parkwood Drive address was not Payne’s residence.

Asked whether someone was in custody as a result of the man’s death, George declined comment.

“I’m not going to comment on that,” he said. “There are still some things we’re trying to work out.”

George declined to release further details on the incident, saying the police department would likely release a statement Tuesday.
