An Anniston police officer was assaulted Wednesday while attempting to arrest a woman, police said on Thursday.

A 26-year-old police officer responded to a hotel at the 1000 block of U.S. 431 around 1:40 p.m. Wednesday and found 31-year-old Nikita Ali with drugs, according to an incident report.

“While he was arresting her she assaulted him,” Anniston police Sgt. Kyle Price said by phone on Thursday. “He got some injuries, nothing major.”

The incident was reported as a second-degree assault, a felony that carries a possible prison sentence between one and 10 years, according to police reports.

Price said he was unsure if the officer sought medical treatment for his injuries.

Ali was charged with two counts of possessing a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest and contempt of court, according to the arrest report.

Price said Ali had not yet been charged with second-degree assault and he was unsure if the officer would obtain a warrant for the charge.

“It’s the officer’s discretion if he’s going to pursue charges,” the sergeant said.
