Spring Garden born and bred Shane Kirk has had several jobs. He graduated from Spring Garden High in 1990 and almost immediately went to work at Springs Industries, where he operated an automated machine. He stayed there 11 years, then worked in production at Honda for two years. His third and current job is with Superior Gas, where he is a service technician. He’s been there 15 years. This, Kirk said, is his favorite.

Kirk and his wife, Kellie, ventured into the business world recently. In addition to his current job, he and Kellie now run Kirk’s Country Kitchen in Piedmont. Kirk said he’d never thought about being a business owner.

“It was a spur of the moment idea” he said. “I made arrangements with the owners of the building to rent it, then went home and told Kellie we were going to open a restaurant.”

He said he’s thankful that she was agreeable to the idea. Both of them work at the restaurant. Kellie and two employees open up, and Kirk closes.

They share the cooking duties, but Kellie often ends up doing most of it.

Kirk said he’s always had a healthy appetite and enjoyed good food. Good food is what Kirk’s Country Kitchen serves, he said. The restaurant is open seven days a week: Monday through Thursday, from 11 a.m.-8 p.m.; Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m.-9 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

“Everything is going even better than we expected,” he said. “We’re still figuring out what to do to keep our customers coming back. Things are getting better every week.”

Kirk said he would be remiss if he didn’t thank the people of Piedmont and surrounding area for their support.

“They’ve really been great,” he said. “We have wonderful customers, and we’re asking them to tell others about us.”

Kirk and his family and his parents, Sam and Brenda (Anderson) Kirk as well as his brother, Tony Kirk and his sister, Lorri Goss, live in Spring Garden. He and his wife, the former Kellie Farley, have been married 20 years. They have three sons. Kyle Hester works at a hospital in Fort Payne. Easton Kirk plays basketball on a scholarship at Wallace State University in Hanceville. Weston Kirk is in the ninth grade at Spring Garden

The Kirks are members of First Baptist Church. Every spare moment he and Kellie have is spent with their sons and attending their sporting.
