Jacksonville traveled to Ohatchee on Monday for an unusual 1 p.m. basketball start and bounced the Indians 72-57. The Golden Eagles led 19-10 after one quarter and cruised thereafter.
Jacksonville coach Cordell Hunt said his players “ran the floor well” in building their early lead and maintaining it. The Eagles improved to 17-7.
Sophomore Donavon McCain scored 24 points to lead Jacksonville. His 11 rebounds helped the Eagles to a 37-24 advantage on the boards. The double-double was the fourth in a row for McCain. Macey Carr contributed 15 points and five rebounds. DeMarien Stewart had seven points, two steals and two rebounds.
Alex Davis, Alex Gilbert and Ron Wiggins each scored five points. Gilbert had five rebounds and Davis three. Wiggins and Gilbert each had two assists. DeDarien Savage ended with four points and three rebounds. DeAndre McCain had three points and two boards. Jay Davis and Cade Landers had two points apiece. Davis dished out a team-best four assists. Landers had three rebounds.
Jacksonville hosted Wellborn on Friday and won easily 77-44. Donavon McCain netted 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. DeAndre McCain ended with 14 points and four rebounds. Carr scored 11 points. Savage had eight points and four boards. Alex Davis, Gilbert and Wiggins had four points apiece. Wiggins and Gilbert each made three steals. Davis had three rebounds.
Jay Davis had three points, two rebounds and two assists. Carter Landers finished with two points and five rebounds. Jacob Tucker contributed two points and three rebounds. Cade Landers had two points and three assists. Stewart pulled down four rebounds.
The Eagles had no trouble on the road Jan. 23 when they defeated Faith Christian 76-32. Cade Landers lead the way with 15 points. Donavon McCain recorded 11 points and 11 rebounds. DeAndre McCain scored 10 points. Wiggins had nine points and two assists. Tucker and Carr tallied seven points apiece. Savage had six points and six boards. Jay Davis had three points. Jaden Barksdale, Alex Davis, Gilbert and Stewart had two points apiece. Alex Davis snagged five rebounds, Gilbert three, Stewart three and Barksdale two.
Weaver came to Jacksonville on Jan. 22 and defeated the Eagles 78-49. DeAndre McCain had 16 points, four rebounds and two steals. Donavon McCain had 10 points and 13 rebounds. Carr and Wiggins each had six points. Cade Landers scored five points and made two steals. Stewart and Jay Davis had three points apiece.
The seeding meeting for the Class 4A, Area 12 tournament will be Wednesday. White Plains and Hokes Bluff complete the Area 12 slate tonight at Hokes Bluff. If Hokes Bluff wins, Cherokee County and Hokes Bluff will have tied for the Area 12 lead at 4-2 in area games. Should White Plains, now 1-4 in Area 12, win then Jacksonville and Hokes Bluff will each be 3-3 in the area and will meet one another in the opening round of the area tournament.
