Jacksonville caps off a full week of basketball with Saturday’s 10:30 a.m. game against Jacksonville Christian on the opening day of action in the 66th annual Calhoun County basketball tournament. Once again, Jacksonville State’s Pete Mathews Coliseum will be the venue for all the tournament games. Jacksonville is the No. 12 seed in the boys bracket and Jacksonville Christian is No. 13. The winner of Saturday’s game will play No. 6 seed Alexandria Monday at 4:30 p.m.
The Golden Eagles host Class 4A, Area 12 opponent Cherokee County today. Piedmont comes to Jacksonville Thursday. Jacksonville travels to White Plains on Friday for its second Area 12 game of the week.
Last week, the Eagles lost two heartbreakers. At Odenville on Jan. 3, St. Clair County downed Jacksonville 60-57 in overtime. Jacksonville led 37-25 at halftime but scored only three points in the third quarter and trailed 44-40 after three quarters.
Rivan Hill scored 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds to top the Eagles in each category. He also made two steals. Alex Davis was 6-for-8 from the floor and added two free throws for 14 points. Davis claimed five boards. Alex Gilbert and Ron Wiggins each scored six points. Gilbert added three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Wiggins had three boards. K.J. Satcher and DeAndre McCain each tallied four points. Satcher was 2-for-2 from the floor. McCain had three assists and two rebounds. Jay Davis and Hunter Vinson had two points apiece. Davis passed out three assists and nabbed four rebounds. Tahj Kirkland contributed four rebounds.
Thursday night, Hokes Bluff came to Jacksonville and edged the Eagles 54-52. Jacksonville led in overall field goals 20 to 17 and in 3-point baskets four to two. Hokes Bluff won at the free throw line, going 18-for-32 while Jacksonville was 8-for-17.
Hill had 18 points, five rebounds and four steals. McCain scored 12 points and added two steals and two rebounds. Alex Davis and Cade Landers each finished with seven points. Davis had six rebounds and Landers three. The Golden Eagles got two points apiece from Kirkland, Gilbert, Satcher and Josh Glass. Kirkland also dished out two assists. Jesse Wilson finished with two rebounds.
