Ohatchee police Tuesday continued looking for a man they said assaulted an 89-year-old woman Sunday and stole her purse as she was entering her church.

Police said the woman suffered a head injury and received treatment in intensive care at UAB Hospital Sunday evening.

The man reportedly approached the woman from the woods outside the Christian Assembly Church at 1270 Cherokee Trail at about 9 a.m. Sunday. He shoved her to the ground, police said, and took her purse, which police said was red. Police Chief Jason Oden said the man fled on foot.

Tuesday afternoon Oden told The Star that police were continuing to search for the suspect.

A post on the Ohatchee Police Department’s Facebook page urged anyone who finds a red purse in a suspicious location to avoid touching it and call police.

Oden urged the public to assist.

“It’s going to take the community knowing something and letting us know, even if they think it’s something small,” Oden said Tuesday.

Oden said police didn’t have a description of what clothing the man wore; the department’s Facebook post described him as short, young, black and having “a medium complexion.”
