PIEDMONT — When the lights in Piedmont go out, the phones light up. That’s when Cory Horton, superintendent of  Piedmont Power & Light, and his four-man crew spring to action to restore power to this northeast Alabama city of 4,445.

“As long as the power’s on nobody thinks anything about the electric department until it goes out, and then everybody’s eyes are on us,” said Dustin Steed, a lineman’s assistant.
