Look Back ... to special recognition for a local Vietnam veteran, 1996

James A. Reaves, president of the Student Government Association at Jacksonville State College in 1955, was the "local student" mentioned in this front-page headline of May 27. He was from Anniston and had been named "Student of the Year."

May 27, 1946, in The Star: Dr. Marvin Yalovitz, a World War II veteran of Anniston, has opened offices at 205-207 Wilson Building for the practice of dentistry. Dr. Yalovitz received his doctorate degree in dental surgery at the University of Maryland and took postgraduate work at Columbia University in New York.

May 27, 1996, in The Star: Jimmie Dale Elliott of Anniston, who died last year of cancer at age 49, was one of 75 people honored in a special ceremony today at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. Two weeks before his death in May 1995, the Department of Veterans Affairs declared that Elliott’s cancer had been cause by exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam. As a result, a group calling itself Friends of Vietnam Veterans Memorial today recognized Elliott as a casualty of the Vietnam War.
