Church of the Highlands, a megachurch based in Birmingham with campuses all around the state, held its annual “Serve Day” on July 14. The church’s Oxford campus sent out nearly 600 people in bright red T-shirts to work on 28 projects in Calhoun County, from painting schools to planting flowers to singing old hymns with residents of a nursing home. “We are trying to create a vision of, one day a year, we all put on a shirt and go out and meet the practical needs in our community,” said Brian Bagwell, pastor of the Oxford campus. “The Bible says that Jesus came to serve, not to be served.”
