Book review: New insight into legendary director Jerome Robbins, in his own words

“Jerome Robbins, by Himself” is a valuable companion piece to “Somewhere: The Life of Jerome Robbins,” Amada Vaill’s well-received 2007 biography.

Robbins is remembered as one of the premier American dancers/choreographers/directors. He is credited with helping the New York City Ballet establish a new dance vernacular that can only be called American. He is responsible for developing and directing classics of the American musical theater from “West Side Story” to “Gypsy” to “Fiddler on the Roof.”
