Dorien Johniken is a junior at The Donoho School. His art, “The Ascension,” was recently selected as the cover art for “The Modern Green Book”, a database in the same vein as “The Green Book” of the early to mid-1900s. Digital copies of “The Modern Green Book” are available at moderngreenbook.net.
What is your background in art? I was five years old when I first started drawing and making art. I would draw on random things such as walls, windows, books, mail, CDs and tables before I ever touched a piece of paper. I would write my own stories and create comic books based on these worlds and characters I created within my own head. Art and creativity played a prominent role in my childhood, and the things I did as a child would grow and expand into something that I love doing to this day. I really owe it all to my mother though, because she was always my biggest supporter and encouraged me to embrace my creativity when I was younger.
