“The Vanishing Sky” by L. Annette Binder, Bloomsbury Publishing, 2020, 278 pages, $27

The genesis of “The Vanishing Sky,” the first novel published by L. Annette Binder, almost deserves a book of its own.

Says Binder, “My father was required to serve in the Hitler Youth as a teenager. I found out about his service – and his attempts to run away from it – long after he’d died, when I came across a photograph of him in his Hitler Youth uniform. Writing the novel gave me a chance to explore why decent people can sometimes falter when confronted by evil.”
