“Light Perpetual” by Francis Spufford, Scribner, 2021, 323 pages, $27

“Light Perpetual,” the new work from Francis Spufford, author of “Golden Hill,” is a literary novel about everyday life.

Not one of the five characters that the book focuses on is particularly special, but each account of their ordinary lives is extraordinarily told. The novel is not all that long, but it is epic, nonetheless.
