Phillip Tutor: 2 Anniston soldiers, together in war, death and now

Oden James stone

The gravestone of Oden James stands in Edgemont cemetery.

Oden James and John Usry are together, still. They’ve been that way for more than a century, an inseparable bond between Calhoun County men who joined the same military, trained in the same unit, sailed twice across the Atlantic Ocean on the same ships, fought in the same battles, died hours apart in the same French soil and rest side-by-side today in the same Anniston cemetery.

Were they friends? I haven’t a clue.
