Cleburne County (14-9) travels to Lincoln today to complete its Class 5A, Area 10 home-and-home series with the Golden Bears. The Tigers clinched the Area 10 championship with a 10-0 victory over Lincoln in Heflin on Tuesday. A win today will give them a perfect 6-0 record in area counters. Lincoln, Clay Central and Talladega all have at least two losses in Area 10 already.
Coach Vaughn Lee’s team did all its damage at the plate in just four innings. The Tigers got off to a 3-0 lead in the first inning when Cade Smith belted a three-run home run to left field after Trevor Houston and Jordan Brown each singled. Cleburne County added single runs in the second and third innings then scored five times in the fourth. When Lincoln failed to score in the top of the fifth the game ended on the 10-run rule.
Brock Swafford pitched all five innings on just 70 pitches. He allowed one hit and did not walk a batter. Swafford started the game with a strikeout on a called third strike and ended it the same way. He fanned 10 overall.
Smith, Devin Hicks and Jordan Brown each had two hits. Hicks doubled and scored one run. Brown drove in two runs and scored three times himself. Nick Dunston singled and knocked in two runs. Reese Morrison was 1-for-1 and scored twice.
The Tigers hosted Munford on Friday of last week and won 6-5 in eight innings when Will Morrow doubled to start the eighth and Noah Gaines followed with an RBI double. Swafford worked the final four innings and picked up the win. He struck out seven. Morrow pitched the first four innings and had two strikeouts.
Morrow was 3-for-4. Swafford was 2-for-4 and scored twice. Smith singled and had two RBIs. Brown doubled and knocked in a run. Dunston and Houston each singled. Dunston scored two runs and Houston rounded the bases once. Hicks had a base hit in three at-bats.
Cleburne County plays Wellborn at home Friday. The Tigers go to Guntersville on Saturday. They will play Lexington at 1 p.m. then meet host Guntersville.
