Springville comes to Heflin on Friday for the opening round of the Class 5A baseball playoffs. It will be Cleburne County’s 14th consecutive playoff appearance. Cleburne County (16-10) and Springville will play a doubleheader Friday, starting at 4:30 p.m. If a third game is necessary to decide the best-of-three series, it will be played Saturday beginning at 2 p.m.
Cleburne County completed its sweep of Area 10 games with a 10-2 road win over Lincoln on April 12. The Tigers earned the Area 10 title with a 6-0 mark in area play. Vaughn Lee’s team scored two runs in the first and one in the third and led 3-0 after four innings. Each team posted two runs in the fifth. The Tigers added a run in the sixth and scored five times in the seventh.
Jordan Brown was 3-for-5 and drove in five runs. Brock Swafford tripled and Cade Smith doubled. Trevor Houston, Mack Humphries and Nick Dunston each had a single. Dunston, Houston and Swafford each scored twice. Smith, Humphries, Dunston and Noah Gaines had one RBI apiece.
Brown pitched two innings and fanned two. Will Morrow worked five innings, allowed one earned run and had two strikeouts.
At home Friday, the Tigers scored eight runs in the third inning and nine in the fourth and downed Wellborn 17-5 in five innings.
Gaines, Humphries, Morrow and Dunston each doubled. Gaines drove in four runs. Dunston, Morrow and Reese Morrison each had two RBIs. Houston, Swafford, Brown and Smith added one RBI apiece.
Swafford and Gaines each was 3-for-4. Morrow and Humphries each went 2-for-3. Houston and Brown had one base hit each.
Morrow scored three runs. Humphries, Gaines, Smith, Brown, Swafford and Dunston each crossed the plate twice. Todd Weston, Devin Hicks and Brown all pitched for Cleburne County. Brown fanned three and Weston had two strikeouts.
Ragland downed Cleburne County 6-3 in Heflin on Saturday. Hicks, Humphries and Dunston each had two hits. Houston and Gaines each singled. Dunston scored twice. Hicks doubled for the only extra base hit for the Tigers. He scored one run. Gaines. Houston and Dunston had one RBI apiece.
Morrison, Austin Benefield, Houston and Swafford pitched. Benefield recorded three strikeouts in 2.2 innings of relief.
Houston and Morrison had two strikeouts apiece and Swafford fanned one.
