HEFLIN — Renovation work at the Cleburne County High School gymnasium has been delayed because plans for the handicapped-accessible restrooms didn’t include handicapped-accessible toilets.

Superintendent Claire Dryden told a Board of Education meeting Tuesday that the project won’t start for another three weeks, but it will be complete by its Sept. 16 deadline.

“The plans had to go all the way back through the Alabama Building Commission all over again,” Dryden told the board.

In April the board members approved plans to renovate the bathrooms at a cost of $104,244.

Students can continue to use the gym during the renovations, Dryden said.

Ranburne High School officials also plan to do some updates to make the school football field accessible to the handicapped, she said. The school will use the Ranburne Booster Club and Ranburne High School Athletic Fund donations to buy new bleachers for the home side of the stadium.

The work should be done for fall 2015, Dryden said.  School administrators plan to do the visitor’s side in three years, Dryden said.

In other business, the board members:

  • Approved hiring Mahala McAlpin as special education teacher at Cleburne County High; Sarah Crenshaw as kindergarten teacher at Ranburne Elementary; Taylor Gardner as prekindergarten teacher at Fruithurst Elementary; Amie Mobley as fourth-grade teacher at Ranburne Elementary; Amanda Holmes as kindergarten teacher at Pleasant Grove Elementary; Karley Johnson as third-grade teacher at Cleburne County Elementary; and Tasha Romines as special education teacher for Cleburne County middle and high schools.
  • Approved transfers for Bridgette Pullen to fifth-grade math and sixth-grade English teacher at Cleburne County Middle and Debbie Holt to special education paraprofessional at Cleburne County Elementary.
  • Approved maternity leave for Alyssa Merrill and Tracy McIntyre.
  • Approved the new 2014-2015 school handbooks, code of conduct and grading scale.
  • Heard the audit of the 2012-2013 financial statements noted that the system was in compliance with state standards.
  • Discussed recognizing a person for outstanding service to the school system. Board member Dana Turner recommended Bill Ayers, who served as a teacher, assistant principal, principal and superintendent in the system.
  • Heard the board offices will be moved to new quarters in the former Emergency Management Agency building by Monday.The Cleburne County Commission sold the building to the board for $10 because the county was no longer using it.

The next board meeting will be July 7 at 4:30 p.m. at the new board office at 141 Davenport Drive in Heflin.
