Placard next to the base of the tree says, "This magnificent tree is the second largest loblolly pine in Alabama. It is estimated to be more than 170 years old and almost 12 feet in diameter. Look up into the branches of this giant ... it flourished during the Louisiana Purchase, and stood tall during the Civil War. That's almost two centuries of providing a shelter for birds, mammals and insects!"
