Cicada larva shell. There are over a hundred different species of the Periodical Cicada. I have seen only two shells in my yard this year, but, as a child, we used to see hundreds of them every 13 to 17 years on the sides of the large cedar trees in the yard of my grandmother. The buzzing, droning sound of their love songs with all of them singing in unison (after coming out of their shells) was deafening.
