This was about the only activity on the beach early in the morning. The brown pelicans patrolled in teams, inches over the pounding surf. Usually they all flew and dipped together, but occasionally one would dive under the water and then flap like crazy to catch up to the others. The waves looked black close to shore. That was because the water was perfectly clear, and the black volcanic sand showed through.
