Summer in the South NEXT | START OVER | PREVIOUS
I tried many times to capture the grandeur of Guatemala's western volcanoes, and regret that I wasn't able to climb one. These mountains march right down to Lake Atitlan, often described as the world's most beautiful lake. It's easily the most beautiful I've seen. I was fascinated by the agriculture on the steep mountainsides. Not only are the plots planted and harvested by hand, the seeds have to be carried up the slopes and the harvest must be carried down. We saw a few horses and donkeys, but not many. Rather we saw many people carrying enormous loads on their own backs.
